The Book of Dark Magic is a book owned by Kaos. In Ring of Heroes, he was going to use it to take over Skylands. Instead, however, it opened up rifts to other dimensions, sending other creatures to Skylands, and even the Portal Master.
Trivia:
While Ring of Heroes is the book's first in-game appearance, it's actual first appearance was in the Skylanders Academy episode, Crash Landing.
