As the Skylanders games were released on many different consoles of varying technological limitations, they have had level design, character design and story changed to fit various restrictions.

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure

It was first designed as a game exclusive to Nintendo consoles with the Wii version being made by Toys For Bob, while the handheld port was made by Vicarious Visions on the Nintendo 3DS. Due to Nintendo not agreeing to Activision's agreements, Activision hired XPEC to make their own port to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

In 2013, Vicarious Visions was tasked with porting SSA from the Xbox 360 Version of Skylanders: Giants to the Wii U for a Japanese audience.

Wii

Nintendo 3DS

What was originally going to be an direct port from the Wii to the 3DS, became its own game due to hardware limitations. With different story, gameplay, ingame gimmiks, NPC characters and an different main villain.

From its portable form factor, the premise of the characters from the figures on Earth being transported to Skylands was changed to temporalily keep the scanned figures and change them any time in-game. The Portal of Power utilizes the infrared scanner of the 3DS and two Skylanders can be stored at the time.

The Xbox 360 edition did support 1080i output, which the Wii edition was not designed for as it could only natively ouput up to 480p
