Dark Spyro is the dark counterpart of Spyro who comes with the Nintendo 3DS version of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and in a single pack in certain countries. He is currently the only variant to have a different catchphrase and moveset (3DS only) than his normal counterpart. He has a Series 3 Mega Ram counterpart.

In Skylanders: Ring of Heroes, Dark Spyro has been renamed as Shadow Spyro and is part of the Dark element.

Background

Personality

Dark Spyro is more wild, erratic, and darker than his normal counterpart, as seen in his Nintendo 3DS gameplay. While in this form, he is always at risk of being consumed by the dark magic. This process worries his fellow Skylanders at times as they fear that the evil forces may eventually corrupt their friend.[1]

Biography

Spyro is a rare magical dragon with the ability to harness the power of the other elements, though he prefers to master fire. However, this innate power also leaves him vulnerable to the influence of dark magic. When The Darkness is nearby, Spyro can channel his energy and combine its power with his own, becoming Dark Spyro. Over the years, he has learned to focus and control his power, using this dark magic to fight the forces of evil.

Story

History

Spyro had some sensational skills. Unlike the other Skylanders, he could harness the power of every element, but still preferred his original favorite - Fire. But there was a sinister side to Spyro's ability. Master Eon observed this first-hand when The Darkness attempted to corrupt the Core of Light. Spyro began to shudder and shake. His purple skin seemed to flush and flare as dark magic flowed through him like lightning. Only Master Eon's speedily cast spells saved Spyro from a foul fate. With time, and Eon's tutelage, Spyro had learned to master this dark magic know-how. And when he harnessed energy, he transformed into Dark Spyro! However, only Spyro's brave heart and careful control prevented him from being consumed by darkness.[2]

Gameplay

Although Dark Spyro has the exact same abilities as Spyro in the console version of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (and thus the same as Legendary Spyro, with only a color swap), his changes are quite dramatic in the Nintendo 3DS versions of the game and later handheld installments.

In the Nintendo 3DS versions, Spyro and Legendary Spyro are quite masterful shooting just regular fireballs and using their Horn Charge. However, Dark Spyro is more adept at physical slashes and using magical thunder. At first he can use only a three-hit slashing combo, and of course dash and jump, and is also one of the characters able to glide. As he levels up, he learns to shoot thunder balls (which he can later run over to get power and speed boosts) and shoot powerful rays of lightning energy.

Trivia

  • Dark Spyro's voice is described as one that isn't recognizable by those around him. "It was deeper, with an edge they'd never heard before - like something from the depths of a nightmare."[3]
  • Dark Spyro originated from The Legend of Spyro series, as Spyro the Dragon's dark form.
    • His current appearance resembles Dark Spyro in the Gameboy Advance version of The Eternal Night, with silver claws and teeth instead of red, unlike the console versions, where Dark Spyro had dark orange horns, spikes and claws.
    • Unlike his Legend of Spyro counterpart, Dark Spyro is capable of controlling his dark impulses.
  • Despite having a completely different catchphrase, Dark Spyro still says normal Spyro's catchphrase in the games. However, he does say "Lights Out" as one of his Battle Cries in Swap Force and in his regular form in Battlecast (the catchphrase went unused in Skylanders: Giants but is present in the game files).
  • While viewing Dark Spyro's biography in Skylanders: Swap Force, the game reveals a screenshot from an unreleased Dark Spyro trailer.
Dark Spyro was the only "Dark" variant until the Dark Edition Skylanders made their debut. Before Swap Force, his scales were also dark purple, and were changed to black like the other variants.
  • He slightly resembles the Ender Dragon from Minecraft.
  • Dark Spyro has been released as a single pack in some countries.
  • His Mega Blok figure has a Viking Helmet, a hat found in the first level in Spyro's Adventure.
  • Dark Spyro is the first Alter Ego to be reposed (the second being Dark Stealth Elf and the third being Legendary Jet-Vac).
    • He is only Alter Ego with a repose that is not a SuperCharger.
  • While viewing his biography in the Skylander Collection in Skylanders: Swap Force, Dark Spyro's story background shows an unreleased screenshot of a Dark Spyro trailer that was never released. This trailer is found in the Skylanders: Cloud Patrol arcade version.[4]
  • Dark Spyro manipulates the power of darkness, which turns his fire breath light purple, not unlike Malefor.
    • In addition to this, his horns glow purple when using his Charge attack in Swap Force.
  • Despite being a reposed version of Dark Spyro, Dark Mega Ram Spyro appears as regular Spyro in Spyro's Adventure and Giants.
  • Dark Mega Ram Spyro uses a completely unique portrait in the Nintendo 3DS games, with dark purple scales and black horns as opposed to black scales and silver horns.
  • Dark Mega Ram Spyro’s portrait depicts the effects on his horns to be orange. However, in-game they remain purple.
  • Dark Spyro is the only variant that has different movesets on the Nintendo 3DS.
    • Despite having a different moveset, his Dark Mega Ram counterpart has the same wow pow as the regular Mega Ram Spyro.
    • It is possible to cancel his Airburn attack early into Dragon’s Fury, which allows him to perform another Airburn soon after. This allows Dark Spyro to access many out-of-bounds areas.
