On the Wii, Xbox, PC and Playstation, you just gotta place it on the portal while in the Ruins. The crypt will appear in a cinematic, after which you need to walk to it to enter the level (note that it's in the upper left corner of the Ruins, not where it appears in the cinematic).
In the 3DS version, you have to talk to Wendel while the figure is on the portal (just like how you would normally add a Skylander) and the respective gate in the bottom part of the Sanctuary will unlock, allowing you to acces the level.
