Template Template is used as a debug character and can be found in various Vicarious Visions titles, first seen in Skylanders: Swap Force. He is a humanoid character with no particular details aside from large hands and a tail.

Appearances

Swap Force

Template Template has three attacks, which includes two different tail spin moves and a series of ineffective slaps. Template Template also possesses five of the normal nine quests and a full upgrade tree, the latter of which is placeholder and will not grant any upgrades. Template Template is unable to attack any enemies, but he is able to be attacked. Other Skylanders with the Swap ability are also able to swap with Template Template.

The HUD icon for the Skylander's element is not rendered due to Template Template lacking an element, revealing a part of the health and XP gauges that aren't seen during normal gameplay. Template Template doesnt have an SWAP movement type, but his HUD shows him with Climb on Player 1 and Rocket on Player 2. In addition, he uses a "placeholder" image for his portrait, which is a puff of smoke that resembles a silhouette of a prototype rendition of Blast Zone with the word "PLACEHOLDER" written on it, except during a battle results screen where he instead uses Magna Charge's portrait.

During the summoning sequence or "Magic Moment", Template Template is incorrectly described as a Fire element Skylander. However, when summoned, the element panel(s) don't show as normal for the loading animation of a Swap Force Skylander, leaving the sequence background completely visible if both halves are used, the white bar that is supposed to represent the split in elements for a Swap Force character and the top element panel missing if the top half is used, or the bottom element panel missing if Template Template’s bottom half is used.

SuperChargers

Template Template appears in Skylanders: SuperChargers, but does not make an apperance in Skylanders: SuperChargers Racing, due to the games having different Developers and code. In the main game, he uses a generic placeholder icon. Additionally, in Skylanders: SuperChargers, he lacks any 3D preview that can be seen with all other Skylanders while driving a vehicle.

Template Template can be seen in an pre rendered cutscene, standing at the side of the Flag Ship at the Skylanders Academy, which plays after having completed the Cloudbreather's Crag.

Imaginators

In Skylanders: Imaginators, Template Template is able to appear during his summon animation, but once it ends, the game will crash. Only Template Template's bottom half can be summoned in this game without crashing, as long as the top half is of another Skylander - this is with the exception of the game's racing mode, where he is able to participate. If he is taken out of the racing mode and into the main game without a summoning sequence, the game will not crash. Unlike prior games which use generic placeholder icons to represent him, his icon is that of Stink Bomb, except when in the racing setup menu where he shows as a red exclamation mark.

In the Nintendo Switch version of Imaginators, he is not able to be summoned without modification, due to the lack of a racing mode, but does remain in the files of the game.

Trivia

  • His name refers to his use as the base for Swap Force Skylanders, indicating both of his top and bottom half.[1]
    • Though he doesn't seem to be a placeholder for any particular Swap Force character, his overall body shape and movement most resembles that of the officially released Skylander, Fire Kraken.
  • Template Template's head most resembles that of an earless Greeble.
  • They share some animations with Free Ranger (such as his primary attack)
  • Template Template’s traversal animations are used by the Jet swapper half when it is dismounted from the board.
  • Template Template slides around if any attacks are done whilst moving, due to the lack of any partial/alternative animations for them.
  • Template Template is also used as a placeholder in Vicarious Visions's storyboards, representing the in-engine Skylander.[2]
  • Template Template possesses happy, angry, and goofy facial animations. However, he is missing a sad animation (which typically appears on other Skylanders from Swap Force), causing his emotion to reset back to normal when pressed.
  • His victory animation for Battle Mode uses the idle animation for another template character, Template Legacy, causing his body to shrink down considerably.
  • Template Template’s materials are not present in the Wii version of Swap Force, resulting in a fully white appearance.
  • Template Template can be seen as part of two development screenshots present in the files for Swap Force, SuperChargers, and Imaginators.
    • Rather noteworthily, these images aren’t stored in any archives like all other image files, and are instead stored as raw PNG files. Additionally, both screenshots also contain the Utah Teapot, a common test geometry used in rendering.
  • Template Template was originally fully blue instead of green, as seen in an GDC Vault Representation[3]
