To try a showdown, you need to go to the Main Hall. The showdowns are in the room to the left of Auric's Shop and to the northwest of the Main Hall. As you progress through the levels of the game, you unlock more showdowns. You can compete in these by pressing the action button when you get near one of six statues of Kaos, Mags, Dreadbeard, Arbo, Pipsqueak, and Flynn. After you complete all the main levels of the game, you unlock all six of these statues, thus allowing you to compete with all of the showdown characters.

In a showdown, you press buttons (A, B, X, Y, (L), (R), L, R, ZL, and ZR to earn coins. There are 4 "strings". Every now and then, a letter being either A, B, X, or Y comes from the left to the right of the screen. These tell you which button to press when the letter passes through a yellow "play" zone on the right of the screen. There is also a multiplier above the strings. If you play a note correctly more than once in a row, your multiplier increases, also increasing the value of the coins you earn. In every showdown, there is a bonus opportunity for you to be awarded with a badge, which is shown on the statue and tells that you "mastered" a showdown. When you have an opportunity to get a badge, you are able to control one of the five skeletons. There is a bar on the right that shows your progress in earning a badge. You have to fill the bar in a short amount of time by pressing any of the buttons on your controller, gamepad, or remote (except Home, + Start, and - Select).

  • If the player chooses to play as Chompy, the game will use the sound effects from Bone Chompy instead.
  • In the game's difficulty select screen, the screen is darkened, though any glowing parts(such as eyes or LightCore areas) on the opponent or the player will stay at the same brightness.
