Defense Drones are Arkeyan enemies first seen in Arkeyan Armory in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. These helicopter-like drones are produced by ground pods located on various platforms throughout the level. Defense Drones fly around quickly and fire projectiles from their wasp-like tails. While the drones themselves are easy to defeat, they will continue to be produced by the ground pods until the nearby control towers are destroyed.
Most Defense Drones are red and yellow, but multiple different colors can be seen in the Arkeyan War Machine segment of the level. In the tunnel area of this segment, they travel in lines, grouped by color. Any drones that the player fails to shoot down will reappear at the end of the tunnel and attempt to crash into the machine by flying straight at it.
The Control Towers are stationary machines that are easily recognizable by their glowing green-tipped antennas and are responsible for powering the ground pods that produce Defense Drones. The pods will continue to spawn drones until the control tower is destroyed. While idle, Defense Drones will circle around the Control Towers. If the tower is destroyed, the surrounding Defense Drones will crash and explode.
In Skylanders: Giants, Defense Drones reappear, but only in their red and yellow variants. They are first encountered in the Machine Ghost's War Machine segments of Secret Vault of Secrets. Like in Arkeyan Armory, they emerge from various platforms and attack by flying straight into the War Machine. They are also deployed by enemy Arkeyan Autogyros. Later, they appear in Autogyro Adventure during the autogyro segments. In certain hover sections, Defense Drones are continuously produced by new ground pods. They attack by forming formations and flying in a straight line toward the autogyro. In this level, they can also drop rockets that the Skylanders can use while piloting the autogyro. Unlike in Spyro’s Adventure, control towers do not appear in Giants.

Trivia
- Different colored variants of Defense Drones appear exclusively in the Wii version. These include green-hued ones, purple/beige ones, Pink ones and red/orange ones.
- If the first control tower in Arkeyan Armory is defeated before its intro can play, the camera will focus in on the empty space where the tower was and its info box will appear as normal. However, the Defense Drone introduction is skipped entirely, since the tower cannot summon its minions.
