Soul Gems are glowing gem-like treasures that unlock a special upgrade for a specific Skylander with their pictures in the middle. They are found throughout various levels in the console games of the Skylanders series.
After a gem has been found, the corresponding upgrade can be bought from Persephone or a Power Pod. Skylanders that debuted in previous games, with the exception of SuperChargers, will have their Soul Gem upgrade avaliable from the start.
In Skylanders: SuperChargers, the Soul Gems are not in any specific locations. You can acquire them in the Academy Store, the Wishing Well, or Epic Chests scattered throughout the story.

Trivia
- Most of the Expansion Pack and Adventure Pack Skylanders have their Soul Gems in the levels they come with.
- The exceptions are: Pop Thorn and Wind-Up in Swap Force, Blades and Déjà Vu in Trap Team, and Wild Storm and Ro-Bow in Imaginators.
- In Giants and Trap Team, two different themes can play when you get a Soul Gem; this depends on if you get it with a Giant, which plays the Giants' theme, or another Skylander, which plays the standard collectible theme from Spyro's Adventure.
- In Swap Force, the SWAP Force theme will play after finding a Soul Gem, no matter which Skylander you use to collect it.
- In Swap Force, the order of the Soul Gems are found may indicate the release of the Skylander, (for instance, Pop Thorn to Roller Brawl Wave 1 release, Grilla Drilla to Fire Kraken Wave 2, Smolderdash to Rubble Rouser Wave 3, and Fryno to Doom Stone Wave 4).
- Wind-Up and Grim Creeper break this pattern, having Soul Gems that appear in Iron Jaw Gulch despite the fact that they came out in Wave 3.
- As of Imaginators, no Starter Pack Skylanders have had their Soul Gems in the first level.
- In Skylanders: Swap Force, Soul Gems project a beam of pinkish-purple light.
- During production of Spyro's Kingdom, the Soul Gem intros were originally going to be mini backstories for each Skylander when placed on the Portal of Power for the first time.[1]
